New product introduction: K344-5 No comments yet

The 4 sizes of K344 pull in Iron

The 4 sizes of K344 pull in Iron

The K344 series of pulls are the core of Cliffside’s Rope Suite, and the 5″cc version, newly added, is the most prominent change to this line in several years. While the addition of the 8″cc small appliance size in 2009 was a great improvement, and the enlargement of the B721 knob has proven very popular, adding the 5″cc size will have, we believe, the greatest impact of any changes we have made.

Pictured at right in Iron, the K344-5, shown with its matching 3″cc, 8″cc, and 12″cc sizes, has a gentle curve with the attractive rope design that makes this suite so eye-catching. You can see from the photograph how the details of the piece capture every subtle touch of the finish to make a bold look. Due to their size, the 5″cc pulls are an attractive complement to the rope-style moulding found in many traditional cabinets, and the tiered foot adds a touch of elegance.

High quality hardware has a reputation for fine workmanship and how well it maintains a finish. These materials, used in making many of our products, have a natural finish that often forms its own natural protective coating that prevents tarnish, oxidation and corrosion and is up to 3 times as durable as plated economy hardware. High quality hardware is strong and flexible, very versatile, has a significantly longer lifespan than products made of economy materials and has lower maintenance costs. Often double the weight of comparably sized economy hardware, high quality hardware is solid, quite dense, and sturdy. The average retail sales price premium for all of these advantages averages only 20%.

Brass is a metal alloy used in making many of our high-quality products. Many of our pieces are classified as solid brass, meaning that they are not hollow and are composed entirely of brass, making them quite dense, and very durable. The brass used to manufacture Cliffside’s solid brass hardware consists of approximately 60% copper, 37% zinc, and 3% other trace metals. Bronze is a metal alloy produced by blending copper and tin. It can contain between 2% and 20% tin. It is a sturdy, durable metal and is much harder than brass. The resonance of bronze makes it ideal. Bronze has a natural patina that forms on it turning the bronze a dark, dull color and provides a protective layer preventing oxidation below the surface of the bronze. Most bronze is coated with a thin layer of lacquer to protect the metal and the patina. Bronze looks its best when it is minimally treated. Read more »

Can you be allergic to nickel? 1 comment

Posted on November 14, 2008 by Cliffside Industries in Materials
Nickel (Ni) is a silvery-white metal that can be found in nature. It is usually mixed with other metals to produce alloys. For example, nickel-iron, which is used to manufacture stainless steel, is the most common nickel alloy. Other nickel alloys are used to make coins, costume jewelry, zippers, buttons, eyeglass frames, pens etc. Nickel is found in many common, everyday items.

Nickel allergy is a contact allergy, which is an allergic skin reaction in response to being exposed to a contact allergen or irritant, such as nickel. A nickel allergy can occur at any age, and typically manifests a few days after first contact as eczema (allergic contact dermatitis), which appears as an itchy, dry/crusty, and red/pigmented skin rash with watery blisters.

Additionally, nickel is used as a primary chemical throughout the plating process used by Cliffside’s supplier to color and finish the hardware. For customers with allergies to nickel, the following finishes in our catalog should be safe, using these finish codes:
  • Bright copper (BC)
  • Iron (IR)
  • Antique brass (AB, .08, .68)
  • Oil-rubbed bronze (ORB)
