What’s the difference: part 3 of 3 No comments yet

Posted on April 12, 2011 by Cliffside Industries in Finishes

In our final installment on comparing Cliffside’s finishes, we will be examining several of our line’s darker finishes — coppers and bronzes. Because Cliffside offers multiple finishes that fall into the “oil-rubbed bronze” category, this part of our line often needs clarification. In this blog, you will read about the old antique, Venetian bronze, old copper, and oil-rubbed bronze finishes. Here now, the definitive guide!

What’s the difference between…

…oil-rubbed bronze and old antique?

Cliffside’s finish named “oil-rubbed bronze” is only available on steel hardware. The knob currently offered in that finish is the S1204 series. The old antique, however, is a very popular finish which is part of our signature line; it is available on all of our solid brass hardware suites, which encompasses a large quantity of items.

The “oil-rubbed bronze” knob available on steel is a very dark finish, nearly a wrought-iron color. Our old antique, by contrast, is a rich brown color, popular throughout the industry. Below, you can make the comparison for yourself:

B600-OA on the left; S1204-ORB on the right

B600-OA on the left; S1204-ORB on the right

…old antique and Venetian bronze?

As shown above, the old antique is a solid brown representation of oil-rubbed bronze. Our Venetian bronze, the most recent finish added to the Cliffside line, is also oil-rubbed bronze, but it contains a light wash of copper. On pieces with more detailing or raised edges, the copper is more prominent. It also shows dramatically on our cup pulls, which bear a distinctive “thumbprint” of copper which sets the finish apart from the old antique.

Both the old antique (OA) and the Venetian bronze (VB) are available as part of the Cliffside hardware suites; any of our five solid brass hardware collections are available in those finishes.

For your reference, we’ve provided several different comparisons between OA and VB. First, on a simple 100 series knob:

At left, 100-OA; on the right, 100-VB

Next, on the more complex Ice Box Cupboard Latches:

Finally, the thumbprinted cup pulls:

K4235-OA (above) and K4235-VB (below)

K4235-OA (above) and K4235-VB (below)

…Venetian bronze and old copper?

Because both finishes contain a copper color, many customers have asked about the difference between these two finishes since we added Venetian bronze to our line. In the Venetian bronze finish, the dark bronze is the primary color tone, while in the old copper, the copper itself is primary and the dark color comes from the antiquing process.

Both the VB and the OC are signature finishes, so you can get suite hardware in either color. It depends on which look you are trying to match: oil-rubbed bronze or antique copper.

Below, compare an item where the OC and VB finishes look similar…

…and another item where they are very distinct and separate.

Cabinetmakers’ bonus!

What’s the difference between OA hinges and AB hinges?

A bonus for our manufacturing friends at the end of this series!

Our antique brass (AB) and old antique (OA) hinge finishes are very similar in color tone. The OA hinges are the same matte brown color as our hardware, but, as noted in our last edition, the AB hinges are also a very dark brown shade. The two major differences are this: the AB finish has a burnished golden undertone, where the OA is a simple brown; and the antique brass hinges have a high-polish lacquer, whereas the old antique hinges sport a flat finish.

See the difference for yourself:

That’s all for this series; check back next week for the start of a new set of weekly blogs!

2011 Cliffside Power Rankings 3 comments

Posted on January 18, 2011 by Cliffside Industries in Bath, Cabinets, Design Tips, Hardware

Our last top ten list examined products quite some time ago. Since late 2008, there have been significant changes to the Cliffside product line, with the addition of over 500 hardware pieces in the last two years alone! That said, Cliffside’s products are timeless, and so this week’s power rankings will compare our 10 best-selling products to where they ranked when we first started our blog.

#1: 100 series knobs

The 100 series, shown in antique brass

The 100 series, shown in antique brass

Previous rank: 1
No surprises here. Cliffside Industries was founded with only 1 knob — the 100-PB. Since that time, we have expanded this series into 14 classic finishes which range from the glossy sheen of polished nickel to the deep vibrance of Venetian bronze. This elegant piece is a testament to the fact that the right piece of hardware can stand the test of time. It also comes in a miniature size, the 100-20, which is available in 10 finishes.

#2: BH2A series hinges

The BH2A hinge in black

The BH2A hinge in black

Previous rank: 2
Cliffside’s BH2A hinge continues to be the best seller in our proprietary European hinge line. Styled by Old World craftsmen who pay the finest attention to detail, our hinges are precision-honed to exacting specifications to bring you the highest-quality product imaginable. Solid, one-piece construction characterizes our hinges as among the strongest brass pieces in the industry, and they are extruded rather than stamped for added durability. Available in up to 15 finishes, these hinges are, without question, the best on the market. An honorable mention is given to our ball-finial BH2A hinges as well, and they are available without a finial too.

#3: 161 series knobs

One of the 161 knob's 11 finishes is iron.

One of the 161 knob's 12 finishes is iron.

Previous rank: 4
The popularity of the 161 has recently skyrocketed — so much so, in fact, that it has surpassed some of our top-selling hinges in pieces sold! The attractive ridged face of the 161 combines with its wide base to complete our second-best selling piece. Available in 12 finishes, this knob can be used in a wide variety of applications (and it’s also your blogwriter’s favorite piece!).

#4: BH2A-NM series hinges

Old antique is the most popular hinge finish.

OA is the most popular hinge finish.

Previous rank: 3
The convenience of non-mortise hinges helps them to maintain their spot in our rankings, just below their mortised counterparts. The slightly thicker barrel and finial are an attractive option for manufacturers, and these hinges are extruded — as all Cliffside hinges are — to reduce metal wear and squeaking. With 15 finishes, the selection of the BH2A-NM, shown at right in old antique, is unparalleled.

#5: 158 series knobs

The 158 looks for big gains (shown in old copper).

The 158 looks primed for big gains (shown in old copper).

Previous rank: 9
The biggest gain in positions among our prior top-10 members belongs to none other than the 158 series. Its attractive beveled backplate has made it a favorite among designers and manufacturers alike. It has a rounded face, which has become very popular among designers seeking polished chrome and polished nickel finishes. Since we added these items in early 2009, their popularity has only grown greater, and we at Cliffside predict further success in the future.

#6: B1 series pulls

B1-3 in polished brass

B1-3 in polished brass

Previous rank: out of top 10
A newcomer to the party, the B1 series of pulls is a recent addition to Cliffside’s top 10 pieces of hardware. With a classic bevel around the feet of the full and bold, striking lines throughout the piece, the three sizes of the B1 (available in 3″cc, 8″cc, and 12″cc) are here to make a statement. These pieces were left out on the very cusp of our top 10 the last time around, but no longer! The B1 series pulls are now the most popular handle in the Cliffside line and are sure to remain a hit with clients and contractors for many years.

#7: K4235 series cup pulls

The K4235 cup in polished chrome

The K4235 cup in polished chrome

Previous rank: 7
The only cup pull to crack the top 10 is the K4235, long the leader among all of Cliffside’s bin-style handles. The simple half-circle design and the attention paid to the tiniest details in crafting this pull are what sets it apart from the competition. With a 3″ center-to-center measurement, like the rest of Cliffside’s solid brass standard pulls, the K4235 is great for drawers of many sizes and shapes. It is one of five standard cup pulls that Cliffside currently offers, but it has always been — and continues to be — the most popular.

#8: BH3A series hinges

In polished nickel, BH3A is exceedingly popular.

In polished nickel, BH3A is popular.

Previous rank: 6
The longer length and beefy barrel of the BH3A series hinge keeps our customers coming back for more! Though the BH3A has dropped two positions in our rankings, it is no less popular in total pieces sold. With 12 attractive finishes, this hinge is designed to hold up to the toughest and heaviest cabinet doors. At 31/2” long overall (21/2” leaf), the BH3A is the largest mortised hinge in the Cliffside line.

#9: 105 series knobs

105 in silver satin, our most popular finish

105 in silver satin, our most popular finish

Previous rank: 8
The oblong 105 is the only non-round knob that features in Cliffside’s top 10. It’s a popular piece that is easily secured against spinning by a convenient brad that holds the knob in place against the face of the cabinet door or drawer front. Its elongated design makes it easy to grip — whether installed vertically or horizontally — and its solid brass construction ensures that this piece, and its popularity, will endure for years to come.

#10: 110 series knobs

Our newest finish, Venetian bronze, on the classic 110 series

Our newest finish, Venetian bronze, on the classic 110 series

Previous rank: 5
The 110 series knobs lend a touch of class to any cabinet face. The distinctive ringed face, a simple but classic design, matches well with any cabinet style or molding. This piece is a great complement, no matter what style of kitchen you are creating. One of the heaviest knobs in our line, it is also one of the most durable.

This concludes our Power Rankings to open 2011. With questions on anything you see here, contact our Customer Service department or e-mail the blogmaster.

Featured suite: Scroll No comments yet

Posted on December 4, 2009 by Cliffside Industries in Cabinets, Design Tips, Hardware, Suites

The Scroll Suite is a collection of some of Cliffside’s most popular items. As with all of our solid brass hardware suites, it is made from high-quality material and available in our top ten signature finishes. Let’s examine the individual elements of this suite in closer detail.

Knobs

100 series knobs

100-PB

100-PB

When Cliffside Industries was founded over 23 years ago, it began with one item: the 100 knob in polished brass. From this one item, Cliffside has expanded to carry a variety of hardware styles, materials, sizes, and suppliers, but the 100 remains our top-selling piece. The standard mushroom-shaped knob has a 1¼” diameter and stands 1⅛” high. Constructed from solid brass, the 100 has a distinctive flat face, unique among many of the other round-faced knobs found in today’s kitchen and bath showrooms.

100-20-SS

100-20-SS

100-20 series knobs

The first two item numbers in this suite are similar for a very important reason: the 100-20 is simply the 100 knob’s baby brother. Standing just under ¾” tall and with a ¾” diameter, the 100-20 is perfect for applications requiring a space saver, like a pull-out cutting board, miniature drawer or door, or the front of a jewelry cabinet. It has all of the advantages and style of the 100 in 60% of the space.

105 series knobs

105-VB

105-VB

Following the same simple styling of the 100 series, the 105 is a oblong shape called by many names (egg, football, etc.). Whatever its moniker, it is still one of Cliffside’s top ten selling products, and has been around almost since the beginning. At 1¼” long and just under ½” wide, the knob is comparable in size to many others in the Cliffside signature line, though it is among the tallest at just under 1½”. The 105 also comes with small brads to aid in installation: when the piece is installed on the cabinet, simply insert the brad into the small hole provided in the back of the stem. The brad will affix the knob to the cabinet in the user’s preferred position (vertical or horizontal) and keep it from rotating if it should become loose.

Pulls

Scroll-3-8-12

Scroll suite pulls in 3"cc, 8"cc, and 12"cc

All Cliffside hardware suites are defined by their pulls and this one is no exception. The SP series pulls are available in 3 sizes — 3″cc, 8″cc, and 12″cc (all sizes shown). Each one features the same attractive  scrolled design in the middle of the pull. The grip height of the 3″cc model is ¾”, while the 8″cc and 12″cc designs share a 1″ grip height. Each pull is accompanied by decorative escutcheons or backplates, which can be used or discarded at your discretion. All of the pulls in this series are, of course, solid brass, which makes them heavier and more durable than competitors’ zinc, aluminum, or steel products.

K4235-IR

K4235-IR

Each hardware suite also features a unique cup pull. For the traditional scroll design, Cliffside chose the half-circle bin pull known as K4235. #5 on our list of top ten-selling items, the K4235 is our top-selling cup and an example of Cliffside’s classic styling. As with the standard pulls and all of Cliffside’s solid brass cups, it measures 3″cc. The K4235 is 3½” in overall length, with a height of 1¾” and a projection of ⅞”.

Accessories

Latches

Each Cliffside suite can be accompanied by the use of one or more latches. Cliffside offers two styles: the IBCL finger latch, and the SBCL turn latch. Each is cast from solid brass and will prove more durable in the long run than any similar products made of inferior materials. Cliffside also offers the widest variety of finishes in the industry for both of these products.

BH2A-AE-BALL

BH2A-AE-BALL

Hinges

Cliffside’s solid brass hinges are the perfect solution for matching an exposed hinge to your hardware. Made with solid one-piece construction, our hinges have been developed with the finest European craftsmen to bring you a product that remains unchanged over the years and continues to provide the high quality you deserve and expect. Cliffside currently offers six hinge styles, with a new seventh style arriving in early 2009. The BH2A hinge is available with our signature steeple finial (17 finishes), a ball finial (11 finishes), or no finial (11 finishes). Its larger counterpart, the BH3A, is available with its signature minaret finial in 13 finishes. The BH2A-NM non-mortise butt hinge has 16 finishes to choose from with the signature finial, and 11 finishes with a ball tip as well. The newest hinge style, BH3A-NM — a larger non-mortise hinge — will be available with the signature finial in 11 finishes coming in early 2010. Additionally, Cliffside offers two styles of offset hinges and two styles of armoire hinges to supply your cabinet construction needs.

The moral?

Remember to contact Cliffside Industries for all of your cabinet hardware needs this holiday season!

Cliffside’s Top Ten List No comments yet

Posted on November 7, 2008 by Cliffside Industries in Hardware
For our inaugural blog entry, Cliffside Industries is proud to present our top ten hardware styles. This list encompasses some of our most popular knobs, hinges, and pulls. Enjoy!
100 series knob

100 series knob

1. 100 series knobs

True to its roots, the 100-series knob has remained the same since Cliffside’s founding in 1987. Featuring an elegantly tapered stem and a pristine flat face, this hardware will lend a classic look to your kitchen or bath. There are also backplates available in a few select finishes to match this particular knob.

Important facts:

The diameter of the 100 series knob is 1¼” at the widest point and ¾” at the base. It is also approximately 1⅛” tall. This is the first knob that Cliffside Industries marketed and sold. It is available in all of our top 10 finishes, as well as several others.

BH2A series hinge

BH2A series hinge

2. BH2A series hinges

Unlike many of our competitors, Cliffside’s hinges are and have always been manufactured from high quality solid brass. These hinges are also adjustable and are made with 6 countersunk screw holes (4 have adjustment space). The BH2A is the top seller in our hinge line by far, topped with our signature decorative finial, though a few selected finishes are available without the finial as well.

Important facts:

All of our hinges are extruded brass, meaning that they are pushed through a die and cut individually rather than stamped from a sheet of metal. Copper, a main component of brass, often requires temperatures in excess of 1100°F to extrude. The benefits of extruded brass are great, reducing squeaking and wear on the metal and providing increased durability. The plate face of the hinge is 2 inches in length, while the barrel is 2¾” inches long. Read more »
