The 2011 Golden Knob
The 2011 Golden Knob Awards have arrived! Presented to the hardware pieces in Cliffside Industries’ line that meet our stringent criteria, the “Knobbie” is a prestigious honor presented only to those most deserving.
This year’s nominees have been presented in six categories: Best Foreign Feature, Best Original Piece, Best Adaptation, Best “Short”, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Picture.
Without further ado, this year’s winners are…
Best Foreign Feature
Winner: M13-32
The M13-32, shown with a Silver Satin stem
The “Best Foreign Feature” Knobbie is presented to the best piece in Cliffside’s lines of European lead crystal and marble. The M13-32 has been our strongest seller in this category for several years. Just barely beating out the new PM5-BG for this special honor, the M13-32 is instantly recognizable by the classic lines of its cut crystal and its versatility, offering two other sizes (one of which just missed out on a nomination for “Best ‘Short’”) and eight available base finishes to any potential purchaser. Although the crystal itself is European, this piece – along with all of Cliffside’s crystal hardware – is assembled right here in the United States, making it the perfect fusion of European elegance and American ingenuity.

Best Original Piece
Winner: B600-VB
The tones of Venetian bronze are lush when paired with B600.
The B600-VB is one of the newest items to hit our line, and it is completely unique to our shelves. You cannot find the B600 anywhere else; it is a Cliffside exclusive – the only kind of item that’s eligible for the “Best Original Piece” Knobbie! Designed especially to our exacting specifications, the attractive grooved designs on the face and rim of the B600, combined with its classic contours, make a one-of-a-kind statement that says, “I have an eye for quality – that’s why I purchase hardware from Cliffside Industries.”

Best Adaptation
Winner: Artisan Suite
Cliffside's Artisan Suite is a true winner.
Although each Cliffside hardware suite had to undergo some adapting in order to conform to our new standards, none was re-aligned more than the new Artisan Suite. Originally available in one size with a metric center-to-center measurement, this suite has flourished in its new configuration, which includes the “Best Original Piece”-winning B600. Now available in solid brass, the B622 series of pulls matches all of our other hardware suites in that material by offering a 3″cc measurement for the standard size; as well as an 8″cc version for oversized doors, small appliances, and dishwashers; and a 12″cc size for refrigerators. In reviving this style, Cliffside also resurrected the 602 cup pull as B602, improving upon its classic design by matching its new 3″cc size to the rest of our cup pulls. Because the restoration of the Artisan Suite to our line was based on customer demand, Cliffside is now able to offer a hardware line that complements the exposed screws of our surface-mounted SBCL and IBCL latches. By far, this is some of Cliffside’s best work.

Best “Short”
Winner: 100-20-IR
The 100-20 is small but mighty.
In our line of small and miniature hardware, no knob stands taller than 100-20-IR… well, actually, they do, but none is more recognizable. A miniature version of Cliffside’s classic 100 series knob, the 100-20 is desired throughout the hardware industry for its versatility. This knob is a great fit on projects where space is a concern. It has a variety of applications in both the kitchen and the bath, as well as for use on other furniture. Cliffside was started with only the 100-PB knob, and its design has stood the test of time: it is still our top-selling item over 20 years later. The 100-20 is a real winner, and that’s why it has captured the 2011 Knobbie for “Best ‘Short’”.

Best Supporting Actor
Winner: BH2A-NM-OA
BH2A-NM-OA is a top-selling Cliffside hinge.
Cliffside’s most popular non-mortise hinge style in our most popular hinge finish was a sure bet to win this year’s Knobbie for “Best Supporting Actor”. The rich brown color of Old Antique is a time-honored classic, and when combined with the unsurpassed quality of Cliffside’s solid brass hinges, no one can come close to matching this piece’s appeal. Our non-mortise hinges – available in the 2″ size with both steeple and ball finials, and in the 21/2” size with a steeple finial – are so popular and so durable because they are manufactured through extrusion, not stamping. With a solid brass, one-piece construction, all Cliffside hinges are made to stand the test of time. Because of the strength of its design, the BH2A-NM provides great support – and thus captures the Golden Knob Award for 2011.

Best Picture
Winner: IBCL-SS
Cliffside's IBCL is seeing a recent surge in popularity.
With the advent of our most recent “Fine Hardware Collections” catalog, Cliffside’s website has received a signficant upgrade through the addition of new photographs of our product. Gone are the frilly backgrounds and confusing props of the past – Cliffside’s products are now pictured on a white background with focus where it belongs: on the hardware. Perhaps our most striking photo, though many are excellent, is that of our Ice Box Latch in the Silver Satin Finish. This latch, a staple of the Cliffside line for the past several years, is one of our most popular items. The photograph highlights the slight sheen of the SS finish on our solid brass hardware, the delicate curves of the IBCL, and the bold statement it makes when applied to the face of any cabinet. Truly, the IBCL-SS is our “Best Picture”.
